If you are researching implants in Korea, two brand names appear repeatedly: Straumann and Osstem. Both are legitimate, widely used systems, but they sit at different points on the price-and-pedigree spectrum.

Where they come from

Straumann has developed implants in Switzerland since the 1970s. Osstem was founded in Korea in 1997 and now leads the domestic market while exporting widely. Local manufacturing helps keep Osstem economical in Korean clinics.

Materials and surface

Straumann uses Roxolid, a titanium-zirconium alloy that can support smaller-diameter implants in selected cases. Its SLActive surface is engineered to support faster healing and is backed by long-term research. Osstem uses established titanium designs with proven surface treatments and a strong high-volume track record.

Evidence and longevity

Both systems report good survival rates. Straumann’s advantage is the volume and duration of independent studies behind it. In straightforward cases, real-world differences can be small when surgery is performed well. Surgical skill and the health of bone and gums matter at least as much as the brand.

Cost

Osstem is generally less expensive. In Korea the gap is smaller than many international patients expect, which is why some choose to upgrade to Straumann while still paying less than at home.

Which should you choose?

Choose Straumann if you want the most evidence-backed option, have limited bone where Roxolid may help, or prefer the global benchmark. Osstem is a sound choice when budget is the priority and the case is straightforward.
